When you look at a new patch of ground in your garden, decide to update an old border, move to a new house, it's easy to dream of a billowing mass of colour, with all the bees, butterflies and ladybirds flitting through the scent of a warm summer's day. -Do you wish you knew how to achieve it?

Gardens vary dramatically in size, but great results can be achieved on any scale when the right plant is put in the right place. Two pictures on this page give an idea of extremes in scale.
The picture above shows the tiny garden of our consultant Mary Payne MBE.
The garden opens regularly for the National Garden Scheme and has featured in many publications.
Below is a picture of part of the "steppe"-style planting at Lady Farm (Somerset), also designed by Mary.
Not everyone has this sort of space to play with, but here at Harptree Nursery, we think we've come up with the easiest, quickest, and most economical way to get the border planting scheme you would like, whatever the scale.
We'll organise everything in one of two ways.

What we need from You
What are the dimensions of your proposed border?
Is the border in full sun, part shade or full shade?
Which way does your border face?
Is your soil acid or alkali? If in any doubt, ask at your local garden centre for a simple, inexpensive soil testing kit, and follow the instructions carefully.
What is the soil like? Is it sandy, average, or clay?
Is it too dry in Summer, is it reasonably moisture retentive or poorly drained staying wet?
What will be at the back of the border?-a fence/wall/hedge/building with windows, or is it an island bed?
What colour preferences do you have?
Vibrant Hot Shades (reds, oranges, yellows)- ideal for open, sunny sites.
Cool Shades (pinks, blues, purples)- perfect for light shade and evening radience.
Smart and Crisp (yellows and white with a dash of purple).
Stylish Contrasts (Silver and Plum).
Or, indeed, any combination you fancy.
Do you have any useful digital photos of the border location?

Some customers find it beneficial to talk to their plants on a Wednesday, but I prefer a Saturday!
