Extremely hardy variety for sowing late autumn. Long podded and white seeded, with white eye.Very good for freezing. Less suscepti-ble to blackfly because of earliness.

INDOORS
If soil is not suitable for autumn sowing, seedlings can be raised in an unheated glasshouse in January and planted out in March.
OUTDOORS
Direct sowings in growing site, 5cm deep in double rows 20cm apart.  Thin to one seedling as soon as large enough to handle.  Water regularly.  Protect plants from slugs during early stages of growth and when the first pods have set, pinch out the top 5cm to discourage blackfly.

SOW : April to June

WHERE: Early sowings in individual pots in glasshouse or cold frame. 
In a sheltered spot to encourage pollinating insects.  They grow well in partial shade.
Put supports in place before you sow the seed, about 2.2metres high should be sufficient.
A trench filled with water retaining material, such as manure, garden compost or shredded newspaper, will help cut down on watering later.
To germinate the seed needs a minimum temperature of 10*C, this makes early sowing outside risky.  Seedlings are also vunerable to soil pests and diseases.
Sow seeds individually in 7cm pots and plant out after the last likely frost. Runner beans need moisture, so give them a soaking once a week in hot spells.
